Why light needs darkness

‘Light creates an ambiance and feel of a place, as well as the expression of a structure.’

-Le Corbusier

‘The beautiful dynamics of sun, bringing these into the building, creates a quality of our built environment that truly enhances our lives.’

-Rogier van der Heide

I believe that the sun is the most beautiful paint, and our architecture is the canvas. It’s amazing how we can mold and manipulate this light to create atmospheres and invoke many different feelings. Natural light is so important and crucial to our wellbeing. The TED talk by Rogier van der Heide points out the importance of natural darkness as well. I love how you can use darkness and light to naturally guide the user through zones of a building as well as create shadows that give ambiance to rooms.
